COSC 426A/LA: Final Project
Overview
For the final, you and a group of two to three people will work on a substantive independent NLP project. You will make both a final poster, to present your research to others in the class and the community during a showcase, and a final paper. More details on this to come later.
Phase One: Thinking through an idea on your end
First, you will work-through (at some level of detail) a project idea on your own. This should be something you are interested in, regardless of who you might work with in the end. You will submit an individual project idea building on a google doc template. Add a shortcut to your doc in the shared folder (you need to be logged in to your Colgate email) linked below. Additionally, post a pdf to Gradescope. This is due by Monday Oct 21 at 5:00PM.
Phase Two: Determine who you want to work with
Review the individual projects in the drive folder above. Keep in mind both the project idea and the availability mentioned. You do not have to work on what you initially proposed. This is to get a sense of who has similar interests or who has an idea you are particularly excited by.
Email me (cc’ing everyone in your group) who you want to work with (up to 3 people max) but Wednesday Oct 23 at 11:59PM.
Phase Three: Project Proposal with Pilot
In Lab 7, you will operationalize your potential final project idea individually. You will then submit a final project proposal with your group. google doc template. Add a shortcut to your doc in the shared folder (you need to be logged in to your Colgate email) linked below. Additionally, post a pdf to Gradescope. This is due by Wednesday Nov 6 at 6:00PM. Finally, we will have an in person (as mentioned on the course schedule) where will we discuss your project and feedback will be provided. This meeting is 10 minutes on Monday Nov 11. See below for a scheduling link. Note, for any group with more than 1 person, at least two groups members must attend.
If you were asked to do a followup/concrete things by Friday, please complete them by Friday Nov. 15 at 11:59PM by adding a markdown document on your github detailing what you did/found.
Phase Four: Project Preliminary Presentation
On Tuesday Nov. 19 your group will present some initial results of your project in the form of a draft of your final poster. A template for your poster is provided below. You should plan to guide people through your poster with a brief (roughly 5 minute) pitch. Your pitch should address the following:
- What is your research question?
- How are you operationalizing your research question?
- What are your methods?
- What are your results?
- What do your results mean?
These questions map to the Introduction
, Experimental setup
, Results
, and
Summary+Conclusion
portions of the poster. You should select one concrete part
of your project (e.g., if your project has two parts, choose one) and present
the methods and relevant results for that part. Please discuss with me if you
have any questions. You should add your poster to the folder linked below by the
start of class on Tuesday Nov. 19.
Phase Five: Final Poster Presentation and Paper
In the final phase of your project your group will produce a poster that you will present (as a group). Everyone will write their own final paper (drawing on your group results). You should contextualize your joint work in your own way. Your poster will be presented in person and should be printed using Colgate’s free poster printing facilities (linked below).
