COSC 101C: DEI Reflection
Reflection Summary
Computer science is playing an increasingly active role in diverse areas of our lives – personal, professional, and political. You are expected to reflect on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in relation to computer science (at least) once during the semester. There are two possible directions, an open ended version where you explore a topic with little guidance or a more targeted version which acts you to engage with existing CS organizations. The activity and reflection must be completed by Friday, December 12th 5PM EDT as a pdf to Gradescope.
Open Ended Version
You may attend a talk, participate in a discussion, listen to a podcast, watch a documentary, and/or read an article that engages with how computer science interacts with DEI. In the form of a written reflection (≈200 words), summarize what you learned, how you think computer science can be more inclusive, etc. This is intentionally left open ended to allow for you to explore intersections between computer science and your identity, or with identities you wish to be an ally to, in the way that feels the most natural to you.
Targeted Version
We all need to feel supported to feel included. Consequently, many organizations and events have been created to provide a supportive community for computer scientists who hold certain identities. Select an organization/event that interests you because of your own identities and/or your desire to be an ally to individuals with certain identities. A list of organizations and events is listed on Prof. Aaron Gember-Jacobson’s website (https://aaron.gember-jacobson.com/dei/), but you are welcome to choose any organization or event that provides a supportive community for computer scientists who hold certain identities.
Answer the following three questions about your chosen organization/event:
- What is the purpose of the organization/event?
- What does the organization/event provide to individuals?
- How can you become involved in the organization/event?
Please write 3-6 sentences or bullet points for each question..
